Start with value, not colour. A mosaic reads across a room because its light, mid and dark tones are in the right places — the squint test proves it: squint at the layout and the colour falls away, leaving only tone. If the picture still reads squinting, it will read from the doorway. Colour comes second: three colour families, a handful of values in each, and every sheet of glass checked in real daylight before a single piece is cut.
If you are planning around a date — a birthday, an anniversary, Christmas — work backwards from it. The Christmas order book closes on November 15 precisely because of the 30-day minimum: an order placed on the last day still needs its month at the bench, plus crating and shipping time, to be under a tree on December 25.
Every Lion & Crown layout starts as tones. A mountain sky might hold forty values of blue and grey; a face lives or dies on five. At the bench, glass is sorted into trays by value — palest to deepest — and the design is built from those trays. It feels backwards the first time you watch it, but it is why a finished piece holds together from across a street and a prettier palette with muddled values dissolves into mush at ten feet.
Pick three colour families — say blues, warm stones and a green — and let them do 95 percent of the work. Accents are seasoning: a flash of mirror glass, a single hot colour in an eye or a flower centre. Pieces that use thirty colours fight; pieces that use three families sing. The grout is part of the palette too — dark grout outlines every piece like lead in a stained-glass window, pale grout melts them together — and it is tested on a scrap board, in daylight, before the real piece is grouted.
Glass changes with the light it lives in. A sheet chosen under warm workshop bulbs can turn cold and grey on a north-facing wall, and translucent glass takes its colour partly from what is behind it — white thinset keeps colours bright and true, grey dulls them. So every palette is checked twice: at noon and at dusk, in light as close to the hanging spot as we can manage. It takes an extra day. It saves the whole piece.
You do not need to arrive with a palette — bring the photograph, the room and the feeling, and the colours get worked out at the drawing stage for your approval before anything is cut. Every piece is made to order with a minimum of 30 days in the studio: small framed pieces from $650, medium panels from $1,200, murals and shower features $180–$250 per square foot. The Christmas order book closes November 15.
Values build the picture, three colour families carry it, grout finishes it, and daylight has the final say. To talk colours for your piece, call or text Lion & Crown Mosaics at 719-521-8312 or use the contact form. Shipping is available anywhere in the US at the buyer’s cost.
