The Studio Journal · Commissions

How do you commission a custom mosaic?

In four steps: a conversation about your idea, a full-size drawing you approve before anything is cut, the hand-cut build in the studio, and crated, insured delivery to your door. Every piece is made to order — nothing is off the shelf — with a minimum of 30 days in the studio, and commissions start from $450.

That is genuinely most of it. But if you have never ordered something that does not exist yet, the details below are the ones people actually ask about — how to start, what it costs, how long it takes, and what happens if the piece is a Christmas gift with a deadline attached.

Step by step

The four steps, in order

1

The conversation

Call or text 719-521-8312, or use the contact form. Tell us the wall, the shower, the view you can’t stop thinking about. A photograph, rough measurements, or a half-formed idea are all perfectly good starts — and the conversation is free, with no obligation attached.

2

The drawing

Your design is drawn full-size, with a colour palette and material samples, and priced honestly against size and detail. You approve it — or send it back for changes — before a single piece is cut. Nothing goes on the bench until you have seen exactly what you are getting.

3

The build

Every piece is hand-cut and placed one at a time in our Colorado Springs studio. Allow a minimum of 30 days from design approval; murals and large features run longer and are scheduled honestly from the start. Progress is a real bench, not a production line.

4

The delivery

Framed pieces are grouted, sealed and crated for insured delivery anywhere in the US, with care notes for their materials. Shipping is at the buyer’s cost, quoted at cost before the piece leaves the studio — no surprises. Pieces made to be installed are fitted on site.

Deadlines & honest bits

Christmas, timing and shipping — plainly

Handmade work runs on studio time, not warehouse time. Three things are worth knowing before you order:

  • Minimum 30 days in the studio for every made-to-order piece — that is the floor, not the average, and larger work takes longer
  • Christmas cut-off is November 15 — commissions for Christmas delivery must be ordered by then, so the piece can be built, grouted and crated in time
  • Shipping is the buyer’s cost — framed pieces travel crated and insured, quoted at cost before they leave Colorado Springs
  • Commissions start from $450 — size, materials and detail set the final figure, agreed with you at the drawing stage

Straight answers

Before you ask

How long does a custom mosaic take from order to delivery?

Allow a minimum of 30 days in the studio once your design is approved, plus shipping time. Murals and big features are scheduled further out. If your piece is for a date — Christmas, a remodel deadline, a gift — say so in the first conversation and the schedule gets built around it. For Christmas delivery, orders close November 15.

What does a custom mosaic cost?

Commissions start from $450. The final price depends on size, materials and how much detail the design carries, and it is agreed with you at the drawing stage — before any cutting starts. Shipping for framed pieces is additional, at the buyer’s cost, and quoted at cost.

What do I need to provide to get started?

An idea and a rough size. A photograph you love, the view from your window, a pet, a place — Simon redraws it as a mosaic design at full size for your approval. If the piece is for a shower, backsplash or fireplace, measurements of the space help, but they can come after the first conversation.

Who actually makes my mosaic?

Simon Beames — a Brit in Colorado Springs with 26 years in the tile trade. The man who draws your design is the man who cuts it; that is rather the point of Lion & Crown. Work is hand-cut glass and stone, never mosaic sheets.
